How to run MapMan on Lewis

If you use an MS Windows operating system and have not already done so then download and install an xwindows server.  Directions for installing a free xwindowing system may be found here.

If you have installed the Cygwin Xwindowing system correctly the icon should be on your desktop.
  1. Clicking on that will open a window with the Cygwin logo on it.  At the prompt type "startxwin.sh".
  2. Another window appears which has a large "X" at the top-left.  In the command line of that window type "ssh -X lewis.rnet.missouri.edu -l <userid>" and hit return.  Enter your password.  You should see your home directory on Lewis.
  3. IMPORTANT!!! At the command prompt type gocomp.  This will take you to a compute node on Lewis that is designated for interactive sessions using MapMan.  If you do not execute this command you will remain on the "head" node, where you will be a nuisance to all other users and MapMan performance less than it could be.
  4. Type "MapMan" at the command prompt and the MapMan ImageAnnotator should appear.
  5. Use the "i" button to find help for using MapMan.
